Ever like just lay on your bed eating frosted flakes out of the box and wish someone would just tell you what to do because it just takes too much energy to look up stuff, like, online and in papers?

From the Tsars to the Stars

Sure, there are plenty of legendary Russian filmmakers, but it's not like Soviet families sat around watching Battleship Potemkin every night. In 1961, they were lining up to see Amphibian Man, the blockbuster love story of a half-man, half-shark who falls in love with a fisherman's daughter. It's just one example of Fantastika, a unique synthesis of sci-fi and fantasy that became a wildly popular craze in Russian cinema. This series includes early silent films — one takes Lenin's revolution to Mars — alongside Andrei Tarkovsky masterpiece Stalker (1979) and '80s sci-fi adventure To the Stars by Hard Ways.
